Program Outcomes #2

Activity 2.1

Program outcome 2: Demonstrate understanding of the interconnectedness of personal. family, organizational, community and societal health.

This was the most difficult of the outcomes to pick different activities to demonstrate. I found myself again having a kind of a theme with the Three activities that I choose. The first on is an activity that I completed in HS 200 Healthy Lifestyles. The activity title is “Five Random Acts of Kindness.” I was able to document how I as one person could affect other women personally, in their community by working with an organization that is dedicated to effecting societal health. With some simple acts of kindness, I was able to effects all areas in a positive way to increase not only my health but also the health of others. I am not able to as effectively do this in my regular line of work as I am not as able to bring the connections together of the community and societal health in general. I can very effectively demonstrate all the connections personal, family, and organizational in my regular practice. This activity was very touching for myself on many levels. This was a hands on activity that put you in the real world to demonstrate how my learning will Affect myself and the impact I can have on the world in general. Program Outcome #1

Activity Number 1.3

Program Outcome 1Program outcome 1: demonstrate foundational knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention. The third paper that I picked to demonstrate the first program outcome is a paper that was not written by myself, it was written by a fellow classmate. This is a project that I had to critique and give feedback on the paper. I had to look up the information that was presented to make sure that it was accurate and provided any additional information on the topic. In the summery of this paper, she gave some recommendations for health promotion for the reservations. I added several additional suggestions that incorporated traditional Native Indian culture such as bringing back native foods and food processing which will significantly decrease the insulin response and decrease Diabetes in the population.  This is a wonderful example of projects that I had thru out my classes of demonstrating a good foundation of health and health promotion concepts as they apply to real word populations and problems.  another reason that this type of activity is so good for this program as a whole is that it incorporates several of the targeted program outcomes into one task. I was able to practice my communication skills, critical thinking, and foundational knowledge of health and disease by completing this activity.  I also especially received great benefit from these types of activities, because I was able to learn new information from a different perspective, not just out of a book. Program Outcome #1

Activity Number 1.2

Program outcome 1: demonstrate foundational knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention.

I have noticed that I had a theme running thru my papers over the years. I selected topics that are pertinent to my everyday working life. I primarily work with frail and elderly. The second paper that i have chosen for this particular outcome is on Obesity and the elderly. I am able to lay the foundation for this health topic and the basic steps that can be taken in a community prevention program specifically targeted at the elderly. This was one of the projects that I completed that assisted in leading me on a path towards addressing this problem, not only in my patients, but also in my own life. This project clearly demonstrates the first outcome of the program. I give Three theories  and the functional rational for why and how they are appropriate for a community health intervention. I am able to clearly define and support a community program with workable solutions and good documentation to back up the conclusions I have drawn in the paper. This is demonstrated by the use of a control group to plainly highlight the success of the prevention program. To see this paper please click here.Activity 1.2

Program Outcome #1

Activity Number 1.1

Program outcome 1: demonstrate foundational knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention.
The first project I picked for this outcome was from HS 300 Human diseases, a case study of COPD and Diabetes. This was significant in that this was one of the first times I had to express symptoms, prevention, risk factors, and community health education all from one case study. I remember stressing about this paper a lot. How was I going to be able to demonstrate what I have learned, not only in this class but also from being a working health professional? This was one of the fundamental papers that I completed that demonstrated my abilities. I was able to express the basics of Diabetes and COPD as it related to this one person and to the community. I was able to clearly list the basic symptoms of each disease along with the risk factors. I was not able to give adequate discussion into prevention with this paper, but as i look back on the classes I have taken, I can see how this paper and this class laid the foundation for community and personal prevention programs.
