Program Outcome #5

Activity 5.3

Program outcome 5: Demonstrate awareness and skills to sustain personal health and well-being.

I truly found it difficult to pick and choose which activities to present that represent the Program Outcomes. There were so many that demonstrated multiple aspects of all the outcomes that choosing was a challenge. For my last submission, I choose a paper that, in a way represents my awareness and importance of behavior change that effects my health. As a health care worker I hardly ever applied what I have learned towards myself. This paper demonstrates how I was beginning to apply and analyze my teaching for myself. I have had several health issues since I wrote this paper but this was the start of becoming and staying healthy so that I could help others. This paper demonstrates foundational knowledge of health, how interconnectedness helps with good health, communication skills to a support group, leadership in following threw with the project and the skills to see it completed. This activity that I completed for a small part in a class is typical of most of the assignments in pursuit of the degree. It shows how even a small project can be well rounded and applied in many areas. I am grateful for the opportunity to complete this Health Care Degree, it truly has enriched my life. Activity 5.2

Program outcome 5: Demonstrate awareness and skills to sustain personal health and well-being.

Health promotion begins at home. As a leader, I should be able to model a good quality of life. This does not need to be done with material things, but in how your attitude towards events is expressed. This paper on the 50 joys in my life demonstrates my attitude towards life in a limited way. A list of 50 things only gives a glimpse into the skills and attitudes that we use on a daily basis to keep ourselves healthy. At the same time making this list also demonstrated our awareness of our own well-being. As a general rule, I now believe that we all should make this type of list at least yearly, to remind ourselves of the attitudes we want to engage in with this world. If I follow these simple 50 joys, I would be very healthy indeed. This is a paper that I should print out and laminate to hang on my bathroom mirror to keep in my awareness how simple it is to sustain my personal health to the degree that I would like and have a great quality of life. Program outcome 5: Demonstrate awareness and skills to sustain personal health and well-being.

This Program Outcome was a bit of a surprise to me. I did not expect a college degree that was intended to help you achieve management level in health care to take into account that the student should practice what was taught for themselves. Too often Healthcare is all about giving and never for doing for yourself. This paper was written in 2012 just as I was starting to take a major life change and become very ill. I had to stop the pursuit of this health care degree for a while to pursue my own health. This paper begins to demonstrate that I was already thinking about what I saw in the future for my health care. As I look back on this paper, I see that I have indeed kept some of the same attitude that helps me be well. I explore how I have seen successful aging in my own family, how humor is important to a good quality of life, and how I will most likely continue working one way or another as long as I can. This paper also demonstrates my evolving goals of my own personal health and quality of life. To view the paper that goes with this activity, Please click here. Activity 5.1

Program Outcome #4

Activity 4.3

Program outcome 4: We will demonstrate the importance of leadership and interprofessional teamwork.

I would be totally remiss, if I did not choose an activity from the Leadership class to demonstrate the Leadership outcome for this degree. This was a difficult choice of all the different activities that we completed to look at and explore leadership in health care. I eventually choose this activity due to the fact that I had to develop a small leadership learning plan. I have been attempting to follow my goals of achieving more upper management positions in healthcare thru developing my leadership abilities. I do not think I ever wrote them down until now. It sounds silly, since I help other people develop goals all the time, and I set small goals for myself quite regularly. I have taken this Leadership learning plan and posted it up on my work space on my desk. I have been deep in thought on how to achieve what I wrote. One of the main points was to “More actively style my approach to team members to fully develop their active participation in the team”. I had initially thought that if I was more able to identify a person’s personality style that I could be a better leader in assisting them to more fully engage in the team. While I think that that is part of my answer, it is not nearly complete. This paper has been important to me , in that it has concretely began to point me in the direction I professionally want to go, with action steps to back it up. Program outcome 4: We will demonstrate the importance of leadership and interprofessional teamwork.

Applied Ethics in Health Care class was one of the most challenging and stimulating classes that I was fortunate enough to take. this class truly hit upon leadership, in a roundabout way. You had to defend your thought and ideas, take charge and show the way. This activity gives you a small sample of how I was able to do this. This paper takes the point of view that just because we are women and we are older, we deserve the same good quality of life and care as men. I have advocated throughout my professional life for quality of life and care for everyone. I have seen the ethics played out in real lives of women who were seen only as things to bring in revenue or worse that they cost too much to the system. This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart and I am very passionate about it. I was able in a small way to demonstrate my leadership qualities thru this activity.
